At Heartland Christian School, student life is full of exciting clubs, athletics, fine arts, and events to enrich their lives and supplement their outstanding Christian education they will receive at HCS. In addition, to forging life-long friendships in our school, students have the ability to showcase their talents and personality while they learn to work with others outside of the classroom.

Our Student Council is made up of a mix of students who volunteer and who serve in elected positions. They are given the responsibility to serve the student body by planning fun student activities and community service projects.

Athletics
Soccer
7th through 12th grade boys participate in Soccer in the fall semesters. In 2015, the team went 8 – 11, and placed second in the MoKan Conference Tournament and first at the State Tournament in division 2. In 2016, the team went 8 – 9, placed third at MoKan Conference Tournament.
Starting in the spring of 2020, we will have Girl’s Soccer, as well.
Volleyball
Volleyball is played in the fall. Girls in 5th through 12th grades are eligible. The 2016 Heartland Lady Mustangs Volleyball Team were the MO-KAN Conference Champions and MCSAA Champions.
Cross Country
We implemented a cross country team during the 2020-2021 school year, and our girls won the state championship trophy that first year. This sport is available to 9th-12th graders in the fall.
Disc Golf
The 2021-22 School year marked our first foray into the exciting world of Disc Golf! It is available in the fall.
Golf
We have restarted our golf program! This is available to 7th-12th grade students in the spring.
Cheerleading
The purpose and goal of Heartland Cheerleading is to promote school spirit throughout the school. They promote spirit by cheering at Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball games. All cheerleaders will learn chants, cheers, basic tumbling, & stunting. These will all be incorporated into a routine that will be performed at the MCSAA State Cheer Competition in February. The Cheer Squad won the 2018 State Championship and played 2nd in the 2019 State Championship. Tryouts are held in the fall and we encourage anyone 7th grade and up who is interested to come tryout!
Ponies Cheerleading
Our Ponies Cheer team is open to girls from 1st-4th grade. They get to learn traditional cheers that the Varsity Cheer Squad performs, as well as some of the choreography that goes along with those cheers. In addition to this being a fun way to show school spirit, it provides excellent practice for hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and teamwork.
Boys Basketball
Boys in the 5th through 12th grades are eligible to play basketball. We currently have Junior High and Varsity level teams. The Boys Varsity team has the following titles:

Girls Basketball
Basketball is offered for girls in the 5th through 12th grades. The Heartland Lady Mustangs have finished in the top three of their conference for the past several years. They have taken runner up at State several times and won the MCSAA 2A state championship in 2015. Individual players have set new school records and many have been named to All State Teams. Most importantly, they practice to develop the talents of each player so they can play as a team. Any girl 9th thru 12th grade can come out for the varsity team. We have even had 8th graders play on our varsity team. You just need to have a positive, willing to learn, play as a team attitude. 5th through 8th graders are welcome to play on the Junior High Basketball team.
Track and Field
We recently restarted our track and field program. It is available to 6th-12th graders in the spring.
Baseball
We recently launched a baseball team.
Activities
Elementary Choir
Students K4 through 5th grade meet once a week throughout the year, and develop beginning vocal techniques and skills, a knowledge of music theory, creative thinking skills, and an appreciation of music from around the world and throughout history. Students also participate in a variety of programs through KC symphony Education Series: KinderKonzert for K4 through 2nd grade, Link Up Recorders for 3rd & 4th grade, and Young People’s Concert for 5th & 6th grade. Activities include performing at the Grandparents’ Day in November, the Christmas Concert in December, and the Spring Concert in May.

Beginning Band
An Elective for 5th Grade Students
All students are eligible to join Beginning Band in 5th grade. This class offers the Band experience at the beginning level. The instruments taught are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion. Students learn the fundamentals of playing a band instrument and playing in an ensemble. Musical topics are introduced such as reading, music notation, analyzing and evaluating music, as well as composing and improvising simple melodies.
Combined Middle and High School Choir or Orchestra
An Elective for 6th through 12th grade students
These classes emphasize the development of fundamentals of music theory, music reading and listening skills. Students will attend Open Rehearsals hosted by KC symphony and other classical concerts in the community to enhance their appreciation for music. Orchestra is designed for students with previous instrumental music experience. Students in these classes will perform in at least two concerts a year: Christmas and Spring.
Drama
Every year our high school produces a full length, theatrical production. We believe this allows students to develop their God given abilities and use the many things they’ve learned in their academic classes. You can’t build a set without knowing how to measure (Math). You can’t learn a part if you can’t read, analyze and interpret (Grammar). You can’t project your voice and speak in a clear manner if you’ve never had to read or speak in class (Speech). Theater is an arena where young people can apply and demonstrate what they have learned throughout their years in classes.
Heartland has produced many plays throughout the years, including The Miracle Worker, Oliver Twist, Harvey, Rumbo, Every Little Crook and Nanny, Antigone, The Odd Couple, Wizard of Oz, Arsenic and Old Lace, Captain Fantastic, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Bye,Bye, Birdie.
Textile Arts Club (TAC)
This year, we have started offering clubs during the last period of the day. One of these is TAC, which is focusing on yarn-related crafts this year, beginning with crochet. This club is open to all 6th-12th grade students, regardless of skill level, and meets twice a week. Students can bring their own projects or work on assigned tasks to build skill levels.
Spring Formal
Spring Formal is a tradition at HCS. At the formal, our students dress up and head out for a night of fine-dining and entertainment. Past entertainment has included: the New Dinner Theatre, Comedy Sports, guest comedians, and special speakers of all kinds
Field Trips
To learn about the world around us, it helps to see the world. Here at HCS, we make an effort to send our students on as many educational field trips as possible. It’s one thing to read about a World War I tank, but it’s another to go down to the Liberty Memorial and touch one. The Samurai warriors come to life even more when you can go to the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum and see a example of their armor first-hand.
